In nomadic Central Asia, the horse is not a vehicle — it is a partner. JOL, the Turkic word for path and journey, names something that has shaped life in these landscapes for centuries: movement with direction, across land that is crossed rather than owned.

Horse trekking with Tunduk means travelling the way people here have always travelled. Horses are provided by local families who know their animals and their terrain. Depending on the trip, you ride or walk — sometimes both. Horses carry loads, set the rhythm, and open routes that no road reaches. Nights are spent in yurt camps. The pace is the horse’s pace.

This is not a riding holiday. It is a journey through a living culture, on the terms that culture understands best.

Who Is This For

Some trips involve multi-day riding and require saddle confidence; others are horse-supported treks where the horses carry gear and you walk.

Either way, the bond with the animals and the spirit of the journey remain the same. Openness matters more than any specific skill level here. These trips move slowly by design.

Local families, not agencies

Horses and guides come from the families who live in these valleys. Their knowledge of the terrain, the animals, and the seasons is not something we can replicate — so we don’t try to. We work with them directly.

Landscape-scale routes

Kyrgyzstan’s jailoo — high summer pastures — and the broader steppe and mountain systems of Central Asia offer riding terrain on a scale that is difficult to find anywhere else. Multi-day routes through country that sees almost no other travellers.

Pace and immersion

Horse travel moves at roughly 25–35km per day. That pace changes how you experience a landscape — you notice things that faster travel erases. Camps, meals, and rest stops happen where the land and the horses dictate.
